History |
History in Coláiste Chríost Rí is compulsory for the Junior Cert. This is a national requirement, indeed it is a requirement in most countries. The subject can be taken at either Ordinary or Higher level. There is a separate book for each year, 'The People of the Past' series 1, 2 and 3, published by the Educational Company. These text books lay out a specific work load for each year in user friendly language and well structured revision questions. The course ranges from the Stone Age up to the present, but the emphasis is on the 20th Century. The class work is augmented by field trips and exposure to visiting speakers. The high professional calibre of teaching is reflected in above average exam results. The high quality of teaching was also commented on by a department inspector when he inspected the school recently. At Leaving Cert level the subject is optional and again can be taken at Ordinary or Higher level. Any student can attempt the Higher level once he has done the Higher level at Junior Cert. The course content and indeed methods have just changed. Many more options are now available and there is a strong emphasis on the student handling source material. Since the course is so new, there are no definite text books as yet. |
